Air pollution and cancer-risk assessment methodology and epidemiological evidence: A preface

چکیده
In the fall of 1977, a Swedish Governmental Committee on Energy and Environment submitted to the Swedish government an extensive evaluation concerning environmental and health effects of different sources of energy including nuclear energy and fossil fuels. The National Swedish Environment Protection Board was charged with responsibility for a critical review of potential environmental and health effects relating to the use of fossil fuels as energy sources while the National Swedish Institute for Radiation Protection was charged with a similar review concerning effects from the use of nuclear power. During the review several key questions arose which were felt to be of importance not only for Sweden, but also more generally. The Governmental Committee on Energy and Environment therefore asked the Karolinska Institute to arrange an international meeting for the discussion of such questions. The meeting was organized by the Karolinska Institute through its Department of Environmental Hygiene, which is also a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Environmental Health Effects and was held in Stockholm March 8-11. A main objective of the meeting was to consider current scientific knowledge about carcinogenic substances in air in relation to epi-

Air pollution and cancer: risk assessment methodology and epidemiological evidence. Report of a task group.
This report is the result of an International Symposium on General Air Pollution and Human Health with Special Reference to Long-Term Effects held in Stockholm, March 8-11, 1977. The meeting was organized by the Karolinska Institute through its Department of Environmental Hygiene, which is also a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health Effects, and was spon...
متن کاملCancer risk of air pollution: epidemiological evidence.
Epidemiological studies on the effect of urban air pollution on lung cancer were surveyed. Overall, the studies from many countries point to a smoking-adjusted risk in urban areas over countryside areas that is higher by a factor of up to 1.5. The extent to which urban air pollution contributes to this excess remains unknown. Studies on diesel-exposed occupational groups show that urban air pol...
متن کاملImproving the Linkages between Air Pollution Epidemiology and Quantitative Risk Assessment
BACKGROUND Air pollution epidemiology plays an integral role in both identifying the hazards of air pollution as well as supplying the risk coefficients that are used in quantitative risk assessments. Evidence from both epidemiology and risk assessments has historically supported critical environmental policy decisions. The extent to which risk assessors can properly specify a quantitative risk...
متن کاملEvaluation of cooking emitted particulate matter concentration and workers cancer risk assessment in the sari fast-food shops
Introduction: One of the harmful pollutants in the indoor environments is particulate matters. Particles smaller than 2.5 micrometer in diameter that are suspend in the industrial environments air are the most deleterious dusts which can cause lung disease and cancer. In present study PM2.5 concentration in the fast-food shops air and its cancer risk for shop workers were assessed. Material ...
متن کاملBiomarkers of ambient air pollution and lung cancer: a systematic review.
The association between ambient air pollution exposure and lung cancer risk has been investigated in prospective studies and the results are generally consistent, indicating that long-term exposure to air pollution may cause lung cancer. Despite the prospective nature and consistent findings of these studies, causality assessment can benefit from biomarker research. In the present systematic re...
